DEEP BREATH, EYE-CONTACT + SMILING
I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO HOLDS THE KEY TO MY centeredness, sunshine AND energy
No matter how confident someone seems from the outside, we all have our moments in which we feel overwhelmed or insecure. Those feelings can catch us off-guard at the most eyebrow-raising moments.
But no matter when or how they crop up, you’ve got this!
HOW TO INSTANTLY BE CONFIDENT
(even if you don’t feel confident on the inside!)
Center yourself by taking a beat to just pause
Inhale deeply through your nose and out of your mouth. This practice is a fast-track to feeling more clear-headed—and it can also help your parasympathetic nervous system relax, as well.
(Pro-tip: To decompress, spend a longer count exhaling. To energize, spend a longer count inhaling.)
Once you’ve done steps 1 + 2, you’ll be ready to connect with someone in a more grounded way. Make eye contact with a stranger and smile, and you’ll come across as comfortable in your own skin, in the environment you’re in, and around the people you’re with.
PRO-TIP
When I first moved to LA and started teaching group fitness, I would often advise my students to make eye contact and smile as they walked down the street.
Time to put it into practice.
Complete the activity below to proactively get into the habit of practicing confidence in your daily life. I filled out the same activity so you can get some ideas + see how it works.

SHANNON’S LIST
1. Scenario #1:
I had a new client that was very assertive and specific about what they were looking for in a trainer. They had a lot of injuries and a lot of places within their body we had to either be careful with or stay away from. I had a moment where I questioned my ability as a trainer and if I would in fact be able to help them and get results.
2. Scenario #2:
I attended a party by myself recently and only knew the host. I ended up leaving earlier than I really wanted to because I was feeling uncomfortable.
3. Scenario #3:
I made the decision to audition for a big fitness company's new project. I go to modeling castings all the time, but this felt different. I was so nervous because it was something within the capacity of my career field that I really wanted.
1. Scenario #1: Deep Breathe
I have a thriving personal training business. I retain my clients and get positive feedback on the daily. So...by taking a deep breathe, staying calm, taking extra time to plan workouts and keeping my self-talk positive the same is sure to occur for this new client.
2. Scenario #2: Smiling
There were probably other people at the party who also did know a lot of people there. By smiling I exude friendliness and open myself up for conversations with the other guests. Chances are there were people there that I would've made a lasting connection with since we were invited to the same party…
3. Scenario #3: Eye Contact, Deep breathe, Smiling
All three tactics can be used in this situation. I was given one chance to show them the best me. So I had to really work to calm my nerves and give it my full effort so that no matter the outcome, I could walk away feeling satisfied and proud of my effort and performance.
